FARMINGTON — Homesickness for Western Maine prompted a former Farmington-area resident to write a script for an independent movie about her life there. The filming of the movie, however, ended up two states away.

Shooting wrapped late last month in Massachusetts for “Tumbledown,” the story of a young woman who struggles to move on with her life after the death of her husband, an acclaimed folk singer. A brash New York writer forces her to confront her loss and the ambiguous circumstances of her husband’s death.

Executive producer Desi Van Til, 37, wrote the romantic comedy that stars Jason Sudeikis and Rebecca Hall. The movie was directed by Van Til’s husband, Sean Mewshaw.

Van Til wanted to film it in Farmington, but it would have been too expensive, according to a Los Angeles Times story published May 21.

Maine’s film-tax incentive couldn’t offset the movie’s roughly $4 million budget, Van Til told the L.A. Times. Massachusetts also offers moviemakers a large film studio that opened in Devens in January.

Kenny Brechner, manager and book buyer for Devaney, Doak & Garrett Booksellers in Farmington, said Tuesday that Van Til once worked there and wanted to film part of the movie at the store.

Instead, he said, they used the bookstore’s sign and created their own version of a Devaney, Doak & Garrett Booksellers store in Massachusetts for the movie.

Van Til got New York actor Griffin Dunne to play Brechner, which Brechner said “was fine.”

Among the other actors and actresses are Dianna Agron, Joe Manganiello, Blythe Danner, Maggie Castle, Richard Masur and Matthew Delamater.

Brechner said the movie is in the production stage and he didn’t know when it would be released.
