RICHMOND — A truck loaded with potatoes crashed Tuesday night after swerving to avoid a moose in the southbound lane of Interstate 295 in Richmond.

The driver, Marc Benoit, 63, of Hampden, Mass., suffered minor leg injuries, according to a release from Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. Benoit was treated at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

The truck, operated by AJA GO Transportation, veered off the highway into the median area, where it traveled several hundred feet before striking an embankment, according to McCausland. The impact broke the box portion of the truck in half, spilling the load.

The vehicle was headed from northern Maine to Connecticut, according to McCausland.

The crash was reported at 10:17 p.m.
