RUMFORD — The Friends of Rumford Public Library will host its annual book and plant sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at the Rumford Public Library to raise money for programs.

Member Anne Wood said the volunteer group has been holding the sale for around 10 years.

“It’s definitely our major fundraiser for the year,” Wood said. “I think that it’s a nice public service, where people can leave with a lot of books for a small amount of money.”

The books, which range from new, hardcovers and paperbacks, to children’s books, nonfiction and modern and classical fiction, have been donated by library patrons, members of the Friends of Rumford Public Library and the library, Wood said.

“Every year, libraries have to cull their shelves of books to make room for the new ones,” Wood said. “Every library does it, so this event not only provides some money to the library for their programs, but also helps them make room for new books.”

In addition to the books, Wood said there will be audio books, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes available.

For gardening aficionados, there will be plants on sale.

“Last year, we had small-scale plants, but this year, we’re expanding and including a lot more,” Wood said.

For the second year in a row, Friends of Rumford Public Library will hold another event from 9 a.m. to noon June 2 when residents can fill up a bag with books and videos for $1.

“Last year, the people who came on Monday enjoyed it, but a lot of people are working at that time,” Wood said. “We’re hoping to get a little more people this time around.
