AUBURN — A Brunswick woman admitted in court to defrauding the federal government by embezzling from a nonprofit company.

Stacey A. Backman, 41, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Portland to federal program fraud and federal tax fraud. The first charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine; the second, up to three years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Prosecutors said Backman worked as a fund accountant at Coastal Enterprises Inc., a private nonprofit, charitable community development corporation and community development financial institution based in Wiscasset. That organization receives more than $10,000 in federal funds each year.

From 2010 to January 2014, Backman embezzled more than $300,000 from the group and failed to report the income on her federal tax returns, according to court records. She was fired in January when her actions came to light.

Her sentencing will be scheduled following the filing of a pre-sentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General; the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigations Division; the U.S. Department of Agriculture; and the Wiscasset Police Department.
