OXFORD — Racing fans will say goodbye to Oxford Plains Dragway at the NAPA Show, Shine and Drag on Sunday.
Part auto show, part drag race, the Father’s Day event features 26 car classes of every make and model — minivans to 1950’s trucks — shined, polished and racing one another.
Two weeks ago, dragway officials canceled the track’s season, saying it was no longer feasible to keep it open with declining revenue and participation.
Events at the larger Oxford Plains Speedway in front of the dragstrip along Route 26, will continue as normal.
Word of its closure spread throughout the racing community, and Vice President Mike Mayberry said he expects to see a faithful turnout Sunday.
“I’ve heard a lot of positive stuff from people in the community. A lot of people are looking forward to this,” Mayberry said.
The event is fairly informal; there’s no master schedule for races, and if the fancy strikes an antique auto owner to try their luck and their car’s acceleration they can opt in at a moment’s notice and make as many passes as they please.
“There will be a few show cars that want to drag but most will just want to show off their cars,” Mayberry said.
Gates open at 9 a.m. and cars can line up for racing at 10 a.m. The event is $5 for a general admission ticket and $10 for showing a car. After the racing has finished around 2:30 p.m., awards and trophies will be awarded for each car class.
Mayberry said it was disappointing to see the dragstrip, which has run during the summer since it was built in 1969, close its gates for the year.
He said there’s always the chance cars will race down the short strip of asphalt next year.
“It’s a big Father’s Day event. Fathers love it.”
