FARMINGTON — A local man was sentenced Monday to serve three years of an eight-year sentence for furnishing a 13-year-old with Ritalin, a prescription drug commonly used for attention deficit disorder.
David Shanley, 26, pleaded guilty this month to an amended indictment charge of unlawful furnishing of a scheduled drug, Assistant District Attorney Joshua Robbins told Justice Nancy Mills in Franklin County Superior Court.
Shanley was indicted in April by a Franklin County grand jury on a charge of aggravated furnishing of a scheduled drug. In February, police charged him with furnishing the teen with the drug.
Shanley also was accused of injecting the drug into the teen, Farmington Police Sgt. Edward Hastings IV said at the time. Shanley did not have a prescription for Ritalin, he said.
Ritalin also is prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and a sleep disorder.
Family members reported the Jan. 31 incident, which occurred at a home in Farmington.
The sentencing included conditions that he pay restitution of $225 to Farmington Police Department for drug testing.
Other conditions ordered by Mills included substance abuse counseling and evaluation, no contact with the victim, random search and testing and a $400 fine.
Mills also included a condition that Shanley apply to the substance abuse program at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham and, if accepted, that he participate in a meaningful way, she said.
Shanley must pay the restitution amount within six months of his release and the fine within the first year, she said.
