FARMINGTON — A “ton of treasures” will grace the food court of Mt. Blue High School on Saturday when Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset Counties holds a huge indoor yard sale.
The sale is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is a fundraiser for the nonprofit organization that has helped people with reading and education for over 35 years.
Items include guitars and cases, adult and children’s bicycles, sports equipment, toys, restaurant tables and chairs, furniture and baby items. Crafters and vendors have also rented tables to sell their items, Deb Burchfield, vice president of the organization, said.
New and gently-used items donated by local supporters and businesses are available, along with baked foods, beverages and a 50/50 raffle, she said. The winner of the raffle doesn’t have to be present to win, she said.
Items have been coming in from around the county, Joan Moes, volunteer and board member, said. One Phillips resident called and donated several items, including a snowboard and ski boots, she said.
“Everyone has treasures and antiques they want to part with,” Moes said. “We have a ton of treasures.”
After losing some grant funding this year, the organization continues to seek ways to make up the difference, she said. They are also writing other grants. This is the third indoor yard sale. The group holds a large used book sale every May.
“We have to fundraise to keep the organization going,” Burchfield said.
Moes, the former executive director, said there are people who need help, but they are hard to find.
“They’re embarrassed,” she said. “They think they are considered stupid. I’ve seen people who can’t read who are quite intelligent. They have to be to keep it from people.”
Literacy Volunteers’ mission is to “foster literacy, language development and education among families, teens and adults who want to improve their literacy skills to reach their full potential,” Burchfield said.
