NEW GLOUCESTER – The Maine Festival of American Music: Its Roots and Traditions, will be presented for the ninth year, July 25 through 28, at the 1794 Shaker Meeting House, at Sabbathday Lake.

Under the guidance of the Portland String Quartet, the festival is celebrating American music from its classical and ethnic roots to living composers.

The meeting house, used by generations of Shakers spanning 200 years, offers a beautiful and acoustically welcoming setting for the public.

Over the years, the festival has evolved to recognize the contributions of immigrants, both those who joined the Shaker communities in America, and composers who made significant contribution to music when they emigrated to America from Europe.

The festival includes public programs on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday featuring performances by the Portland String Quartet and Brother Arnold Hadd, a Shaker, as well as others. All programs begin at 7 p.m. Friday is devoted to ensemble workshops, with a free student performance, open to the public, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

A passionate advocate for choral music and the expressive power of the human voice, Siegfried has devoted increasing attention to the composition of vocal music in recent years. His music has been described as “hypnotic and beautifully written” according to The Boston Musical Intelligencer.

And on Saturday, June 28, the Portland String Quartet, with guest oboist Kathleen McNerney, will perform works by Mozart and composer Stephen Gryc, a professor at the Hartt School of Music. Debussy’s lone and exquisite String Quartet in G Minor, Opus 10 will conclude the concert.

The Portland String Quartet has had an enormous impact locally, regionally and internationally since its inception in 1969.

The quartet members became not only principal players in the Portland Symphony Orchestra, they established teaching studios, school music positions and chamber music concerts serving the greater Portland area and the state.

Members of the quartet include Dean Stein, Ronald Lantz, Julia Adams and Paul Ross.
