FARMINGTON — Police said a local man was arrested Saturday after they found his cellphone had been used to browse child pornography websites.

Nicholas L. Smiley, 23, was charged with violating conditions of his release, police Chief Jack Peck said.

Smiley was stopped by officer Derek Doucette on Main Street at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday for loud exhaust on his vehicle, Peck said. During a routine check, Doucette learned Smiley was prohibited from possessing child pornography, Peck said.

The court provision also allows police to search any electronic device in Smiley’s possession, Peck said. Doucette asked to see Smiley’s cellphone and, while checking the Web browser history, found pornographic websites were visited and there were images of children under the age of 12, Peck said.

Smiley was arrested and taken to the Franklin County Detention Center.

Police intend to send the cellphone to the Maine Computer Crimes Task Force for further analysis, Peck said.

Smiley was released Monday on a Maine Pretrial Contract and has a court appearance scheduled for Aug. 27.
