BUCKFIELD — Selectmen on Tuesday night directed Buckfield Rescue Chief Lisa Bennett to compile a list of recommended cuts to her budget to satisfy cuts made by voters at the annual town meeting in June.

Bennett said the cuts would have to be in staffing.

Voters on June 14 approved $135,000 for the Rescue Department, $51,585 less than the proposed $186,585. That’s a decrease of almost 28 percent.

The board also directed Road Commissioner Cindy Dunn to compile a list of recommended cuts to the summer roads budget to satisfy the $100,000 voters cut at the town meeting. The proposed amount of $350,000 was cut to $250,000, a decrease of more than 28 percent.

There was a great deal of controversy at the June 14 meeting over a $13,600 overdraft by the Rescue Department and a $32,780 overdraft by the Road Department.

The board will discuss the recommendations at its July 15 meeting.

The board also approved taking money from the equipment reserve account and $10,000 from the emergency contingency fund to cover Highway Department overdrafts.
