PARIS — Selectmen on Monday agreed to redraw this summer’s road maintenance schedule after construction bids came in over budget.
Selectmen unanimously agreed to a bid from F.R. Carroll Inc. of Limerick to pave three-quarters of a mile of Elm Hill Road, the entirety of Ryerson Hill Road and split ditching work on Ellingwood Road and Elm Hill Road between L.P. Poirier & Son Inc. of Lewiston and the town Highway Department.
Road construction bids amounted to $575,032 for paving, blasting and ditching work, roughly $54,000 more than the amount the town estimated in this year’s budget, according to Town Manager Amy Bernard.
In May, selectmen agreed to redo the town’s 11-year road maintenance schedule in favor of a more flexible plan deemed to save money over time.
The decision reassess the date and types of repairs on roads each year, instead of adhering to a predetermined schedule set years in advance.
This year, the move fast-tracked repairs on Ryerson Hill Road, the deteriorating condition of which had been a source of derision among some residents.
According to the bids received this past Wednesday, the badly-needed repairs on Ryerson Hill Road came in roughly $60,000 over budget.
The town plans to save $45,000 by having the highway crew complete the ditching work on Ellingwood Road, Bernard said.
Selectmen also considered two alternative options devised by Bernard, including partially paving Ryerson Hill Road or holding a special town meeting to ask voters to overdraw the road improvement account by $141,000. Both plans were rejected for being unpopular.
“I’m not going to the voters and asking for $141,000,” Selectman Janet Jamison said.
