BETHEL — The MollyOckett Days festival will be held Saturday and Sunday on the Bethel Common and Main Street.
The festival is named after MollyOckett, a Pequawket Indian who lived among and befriended the early settlers of Western Maine.
MollyOckett Days kicks off at 10 a.m. July 19 with a parade from the parking lot of the Casablanca Theater, up Main Street to around the Bethel Common.
Bethel students Hunter Cline and Skye Fournier will sit in the lead car of the parade after being selected as the winners of the 2014 MollyOckett Days Essay Challenge. The writing contest that invites Telstar Regional High School and Gould Academy students to answer the question, “Why is it important that we still celebrate MollyOckett?”
Jessie Seymour Perkins of the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce said that over the past few years, the chamber has been working on finding new music and entertainment to feature in the hours leading up to the Saturday-evening fireworks show.
“Years ago, there used to be a fiddling contest during the MollyOckett Days festival,” Seymour Perkins said. “This year, we found a fiddling group to perform. It’s not a contest, but we’re hoping it’ll remind people of the past.”
Seymour Perkins said the food and craft vendors have been “filling up pretty fast,” and there are more Main Street businesses signing up for the event than previous years.
“This is our third year that we’ve closed off Main Street for the festival, and we’re seeing a lot more participation from Main Street businesses, which is great,” Seymour Perkins said.
