SANFORD — Sanford police say an abduction attempt reported by two 10-year-old girls was a hoax.

Police originally said the failed abduction attempt occurred Tuesday evening. The girls told police that a man in a black van attempted to abduct them but fled after they screamed.

The story quickly unraveled. By Thursday, police had determined that the girls made up the story.
