AUGUSTA — The General Federation of Women’s Clubs Maine spring student high school art show and clubwomen photography contest was held at the Senator Inn & Spar.

President Anne Cress introduced the organizer and chairman of the GFWC Maine Art Show, Barbara Hathaway, “Painter of Sunsets,” from Wilton, to give an art report and announce the results of the art show. Hathaway is an art instructor for Farmington and Auburn Adult Community Education programs and instructs art in a variety of mediums at the Hathaway Art Studio.

Judges were artists: Jean Kigel, from Warren, Asian Brush instructor at Maine College of Art; Walter Gaffney Kessell, from Fayette, children’s book illustrator; and Matt Demers, from Whitefield, trained design and graphic artist.

Sixteen high school students participated. Third-place winner was Kaitlynn Hutchins, grade 11, Westbrook, medium soft pastel. Second-place winner was Tyler Eldridge, grade 12, from Gorham High School, medium oil paint, sponsored by the Gorham Women’s Club. First-place winner was Abigail Dangler, grade 12, Mt. Desert Island High School, medium pastel, sponsored by District 4, Castine Women’s Club.

Each received a folder with art brochures and information, a certificate of participation and certificate in the category that they won, plus a check.

Honorable mentions were Pauline Tarr, grade nine, home school, sponsored by Castine Women’s Club; Joanna Howell, sponsored by the Newport Women’s Club; and Yunji Kim (Jane), grade 12, sponsored by the Miosac Women’s Club of Dover-Foxcroft.

Eighteen photos in the Clubwoman Photography Contest were judged by the same judges. There were three categories in The World In Pictures.

Sue Ellen Lexier, GFWC Skowhegan Women’s Club, won in two categories, Scenes and Living Things. Still Life was won by Bonnie Chamberlain of Skowhegan Women’s Club. Living Things in Black & White category was won by Nancy Ames, GFWC Maine Semper Fidelis Club, Skowhegan.

Each winner received a certificate.

The GFWC Maine also offers an opportunity for club members to enter a writing contest. The winner of the short story contest was Jean Lawrence, from Waldoboro Women’s Club. Lawrence was a high school teacher at Medomak Valley High School. She shared a partial reading of her story, “It’s the Definition That Counts!”.

The short story contest was judged by Mary Ann Kittridge, an avid reader from Wilton.

Hathaway gave a report of the art programs and projects for 2013 and awarded a certificate for best art narrative, to Laura Neal, president of the GFWC Dexter Women’s Literary Club.

Marjorie Goodwin, of Clinton, was installed as the president of GFWC Maine for 2014-2016. Goodwin chose a theme of “Our past will determine our future,” with the focus on preventing elder abuse. Goodwin announced that her business card and stationery art illustration was designed by Barbara Hathaway. The watercolor illustration shows three club women, of different ages, with supporting hands on the shoulders of the next member.
