The Maine State Police identified the man who died Sunday evening following a standoff with several police departments in Mexico.
The victim was identified as Steven R. Piiranen, 52, of Paris, according to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland.
McCausland added that the two officers who fired at Piirainen were Maine state trooper Paul Casey and Mexico reserve officer Dean Benson.
Both Casey and Benson have been placed on administrative leave with pay, as is standard with all police shootings, McCausland said.
McCausland said that because police were involved in the shooting, the Attorney General’s Office will investigate.
The standoff began Sunday afternoon after Piiranen stole a pickup truck in Paris and led police officers on a chase to Main Street in Mexico.
Following a shootout and standoff that lasted several hours, state police tactical team members confirmed that Piiranen was found dead inside of his vehicle outside of the Circle K store.
