FARMINGTON — Police said a Farmington man was arrested Sunday on a misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals.

Albert B. Farmer, 24, was arrested after police were called to a home on Sawtelle Lane about 5 p.m. for a report of a domestic assault. Farmer was staying there with his girlfriend and her mother, according to the police report, Rachel Heseltine, police secretary, said.

When officer Daryn Gilbert and Sgt. Michael Adcock responded, Farmer told them his girlfriend’s mother assaulted him during an argument over cigarettes. He told police he did not want to pursue charges against her, according to the report.

When police spoke with both women, they said the incident was not about cigarettes but involved Farmer’s treatment of the mother’s dog.

Farmer was released from Franklin County Detention Center on personal recognizance Aug. 18.
