NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen was told Thursday night that a culvert on Orchard Street is collapsing and must be addressed in the near future.

Town Manager David Holt said the culvert, which cannot be seen by motorists driving along the street, is deep and wide.

“It will be a fairly complicated project,” he said, estimating the cost at between $5,000 and $10,000. Sewer and water lines run under the street, which will make the project more difficult to complete, he said.

Holt stressed that the culvert does not pose a threat to motorists but will become problematic if it collapses.

Rob Prue of Pine Tree Engineering in Bath has been hired to write up the request for proposals to hire a contracting firm.

In other news, the board gave the go-ahead for a permit to Cafe Nomad owner Scott Berk for a catering license for the Sept. 7 BikeMaine tour. The tour will stop for one night. Beer, wine and food will be served from an enclosed area in the Norway Savings Bank parking lot at Temple and Danforth streets.

The board also approved a catering permit for Western Maine Gourmet Services, requested by Cody Sumner of Paris, for the Kiwanis Murder Mystery Dinner on Sept. 6 at the Granite Ridge Estate and Barn on Delano Drive in North Norway.

A catering permit was also approved for Barn & Table of Whitney Road in Gray, requested by Michael Fraser, for a wedding at the Granite Ridge Estates and Barn on Aug. 23.
