CANTON — Selectmen voted Wednesday night to hold a special town meeting next week to vote on details of a bond package to repair Staples Hill Road.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the fire station.
The town voted to borrow $400,000 for the project and the lender is requiring voter approval of the bond package details.
In other business, Fire Department Assistant Chief Jason Vaughan told selectmen the town needs an additional LifeFlight helicopter landing zone. He recommended the lot next to the Baptist Church on Route 108.
Selectmen asked Vaughan to contact the Maine Emergency Management Agency. The property is partially in the flood plain and was purchased with a federal grant.
Also Wednesday, resident Chris Dailey met with the board about several petitions he and others filed with the previous Board of Selectmen that town officials said were invalid. When the town submitted them to the Maine Municipal Association, it ruled that all of the petitions were valid.
One of the petitions called for electing the fire chief every three years. Instead of acting on the petition, selectmen put an ordinance written by Vaughan on the a town meeting warrant.
Vaughan said the main difference between the petition and the ordinance was the required level of certification for the chief.
According to Dailey, there was no public hearing on the ordinance.
Selectman Malcolm Ray suggested they “cut to the chase.” He asked Dailey if he wanted the original petition on the November ballot.
Dailey said he did.
Board of Selectmen Chairman Donald Hutchins said, “If a mistake was made by a former board, I will not apologize, but we will make it right.”
He said Wednesday’s meeting was only the fourth of the new board, which had acted expeditiously to get Dailey’s issue on the agenda.
Hutchins told the board there is a new business in town and encouraged residents to support it.
Loretta Blancato has opened Fresh Bouquets, offering mixed flower bouquets in season. Customers can make single purchases or buy subscriptions that will deliver fresh bouquets in the Canton area for $10 per week.
