OLD TOWN – Heart problems run in the family of Larry McLaughlin; he had three brothers die after their first heart attack, and his dad had heart trouble as well. And McLaughlin didn’t escape his family genes; he had a triple bypass five years ago this month, on Sept. 10, 2009.
McLaughlin took that life-changing event seriously. He started eating better and learned how to improve his exercise program; formerly a walker, he started running a couple miles a day. He lost about 25 pounds in the process.
“I’ve got in better shape, and so I decided to mark the five-year anniversary by doing something special,” said McLaughlin.
That something special will be taking part in the Central Maine Heartwalk and Fun Run, a 5K event that is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. At age 61, it will be the first road race in which he’s ever participated.
I don’t have a time goal but I do have fundraising goal of $300 individually for me and $1,500 for our family team, which includes five of my children,” said McLaughlin.
Those who wish to make donations may do so by making checks out to The American heart Association and mailing them to McLaughlin at 777 Stillwater Avenue, Lot 25, Old Town ME 04468. Those with questions may call him at 817-3571.
When asked if he had any further road races planned in the future, McLaughlin said there is one at least.
“Heart attack survivors who run the Auburn race will get red hats. I’m planning to wear that hat and run the road race at Riverfest to thank people for helping me meet my goal,” said McLaughlin.
