RUMFORD — Police said a local man was arrested early Tuesday morning after a nearly seven-hour standoff with local police and the Maine State Police Tactical Team that shut down Route 2.

Rumford police Cpl. Lawrence Winson arrested Chad Bradbury, 36, of 1374 Route 2, on three counts of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and one count of creating a police standoff. Bradbury was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris to await a court appearance. He will be arraigned Oct. 17 in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.

The standoff near the intersection of Andover Road and Route 2 ended without shots being fired.

Rumford police Chief Stacy Carter said Tuesday morning in an email that at approximately 9:05 p.m. Monday, the department received a call about a man yelling and waving a gun around on his porch.

A neighbor heard the commotion and went to investigate with his son and another boy, he said. When they got close to the residence, the man pointed a gun at them and made a threat, Carter said.

They retreated and called 911. Officers responded and the man had gone inside. Attempts to contact him were unsuccessful, Carter said.

A female was removed from the residence, Carter said.

A police perimeter was set up and the tactical team and a negotiator were requested. Mexico and Dixfield police, Oxford County deputy sheriffs and Fire Department personnel assisted, closing Route 2 and diverting traffic to South Rumford.

At approximately 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, the tactical team apprehended Bradbury without incident, Carter said.
