SUMNER — A barbecue cook-off to raise money for educational scholarships is planned from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the West Sumner Universalist Church.

The menu includes pulled pork, ribs, brisket, beans, coleslaw and corn on the cob. The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children under 10 years old.

The scholarship fund was established in 1999 and a total of $25,100 has been awarded to 77 residents over the years. This year, $3,600 was awarded to 12 people.

Money is raised from bottle drives, donations, calendar sales, community suppers, awards from the Maine Community Foundation and town contributions.

The bottle drive is traditionally held the first Saturday after Labor Day and bottles may be left by mail boxes Sept. 6 or dropped off at the Town Office any time.
