NEWRY — An odd chain of events late Saturday night ignited a fire at a vacant condominium at Sunday River Ski Resort.
Fire Chief Bruce Pierce said Tuesday afternoon via Facebook that a cabinet of dishes fell from a wall, taking down a microwave and its shelf next to the cabinet. The microwave struck the stove, turning on an electric burner, which caused the shelving to smolder, he said.
At 9:28 p.m., Newry firefighters asked for air packs and help from Bethel firefighters.
Pierce said Newry firefighters removed the burning shelf and checked for any fire in the walls before clearing the smoke from the building.
Pierce didn’t have a damage estimate or know who owns the condo. Newry Administrator Loretta Powers said Wednesday that she believes it’s a rental unit.
Nobody was using the condo at the time of the fire, Pierce said.
