FARMINGTON — The Franklin County Animal Shelter closed at noon Wednesday after a puppy died from canine parvovirus.

The shelter will remain closed through the weekend and reassessed at the end of the week, Heidi Jordan, executive director said.

The puppy was acting lethargic and had diarrhea, symptoms of parvovirus, she said. It was taken to a vet and tested positive for parvo, she said. The puppy died on the way back from the vet.

The shelter needs bleach and paper towels to help deal with the parvo outbreak, she said. Items may be left at the front door.

“We need patience and understanding that this kind of thing can happen in shelters. We need folks to know that we are handling it openly, honestly and professionally,” Jordan said.
