NORRIDGEWOCK — Leaders in Norridgewock are trying to determine how to care for an ancient cemetery where an expanding cornfield is making it impossible for public works crews to drive in and maintain it.

The Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1r8XoKK ) reported the nearby cornfield reduced the width of a path to the point where crews can’t get in by car. Norridgewock selectmen Ron Frederic said the board will make a decision about whether crews can walk in.

State law says municipalities must maintain cemeteries like the Oxbow Cemetery that date to or before 1880. A farmer and former selectmen who owns adjacent property said he doesn’t want workers damaging his corn. The corn is planted very close to the edge of a field near the cemetery, making the cemetery hard to access.
