PORTLAND (AP) — A man trying to rob a South Portland convenience store got more than he bargained for when the clerk fought back, wrestled him to the floor and put him in a chokehold until police arrived.
Police said a masked suspect entered the Circle K store just before 6 a.m. Saturday and demanded cash. He went behind the counter and kept his hand under his hoodie, suggesting he had a weapon.
When the suspect grabbed the clerk’s arm, he fought back, and with the help of a customer, held the thief until police arrived.
Police arrested 45-year-old Ronald Castrello on a robbery charge.
The clerk’s name wasn’t released.
Police said they usually advise store workers to comply with robbers, but in this case the clerk was cornered and had no choice.
