1924 – 2014

LEWISTON — Paul R. Dickman, 90, of Farmington, passed away Friday morning, Sept. 5, at Central Maine Medical Center, with his loving family by his side.

Paul was born on Jan. 25, 1924, in Margaretville, N.Y., a son of Smith V. and Augusta (Rowe) Dickman. He was raised on a farm in East Meredith, in the Catskills of New York.

While he graduated from Treadwell Central Schools in 1940, his talent for “patching” was learned on the farm. Paul went on to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1944 with an aeronautical engineering degree. That fall, Paul went to work on Long Island for Grumman Aircraft Corporation (now Northrup Grumman), where he made a lifelong career, retiring to Maine in 1992.

He met fellow Grummanite Dorothy Brader and they were married after two years of commuting “up home” together, and raised their family in Northport, N.Y. They shared 62 wonderful years of marriage.

Paul had an indefatigable energy, took pride in his work and enjoyed long rides and family road trips. The Dickman family crisscrossed the country many times, camping in all 50 states by 1965. Paul, Dory and the family also enjoyed some 16 years of cruising on their sailboat, Starlight.
