PARIS — The town has cleared CN Brown company to expand propane storage to meet growing demand for the oil alternative.

Planning Board members unanimously agreed Tuesday night to allow the company to install a second 30,000-gallon propane tank at their headquarters at 1 CN Brown Way in South Paris.

Doubling local storage allows the company to meet growing market demand for the fuel, according to Maintenance Supervisor Kevin Moore.

A company spokesperson was not available for comment Wednesday.

The project has received the stamp of approval from the Office of the State Fire Marshal and Paris Fire Department, pending the installation of additional safety features.

In 2007, the board approved the installation of multiple tanks. However, Chairman Russ Case said stricter fire laws encouraged them to treat the expansion request as a new application.

Code Enforcement Officer Fred Collins said safety concerns were addressed by upgrading the fire hydrant near the site, installing a fence to coral the propane tanks and installing a gas detector to tip inspectors off to a possible leak.

An additional sensor will be installed near the Paris Utilities District over concerns of a leak migrating downhill.

Work could begin immediately. Moore estimated it would take a month to complete.

The board waived a public hearing on the topic.
