AUBURN — The Auburn and Lewiston Public Libraries now offer the Mango Languages online language-learning system to customers.

Mango is free for all library patrons and can be accessed anywhere with an Internet connection. Each lesson combines real life situations and audio from native speakers with simple, clear instructions. The courses are presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application by focusing on the four key elements of language learning: vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and culture.

Mango offers access to 60 foreign language courses and 17 English courses taught completely in the user’s native language. In addition to traditional language courses, Mango also offers the opportunity to learn through foreign film with Mango Premiere and access to a variety of specialty mini courses, like Pirate, Medical Spanish and romance courses. Mango can be accessed at the library, remotely or even on-the-go with apps for iPhone, Android, Kindle and Nook.

On Monday, Sept. 22, both libraries will celebrate Mango Day with a day-long open house, with refreshments and giveaways throughout the day. Computer labs in each library will be open, and staff and volunteers on hand to demonstrate Mango.

In the evening, Auburn Public Library will show the Cantonese language film, “Iron Monkey.” This film is free and open to the public. The film will start at 6 p.m.

“We are thrilled to join the growing list of libraries across the country that offer Mango to their patrons,” said Marcela Peres from the Lewiston Public Library. “Some people need to learn a second language for business or travel. Others want to for personal or professional development. No matter the reason, learning a language should be fun. With Mango, it definitely is.”

Added Suzanne Sullivan from the Auburn Public Library, “This is a great addition to the existing online content we offer jointly through LibraryLA.org. Lewiston and Auburn library cardholders already have access to a wealth of great content on LibraryLA.org. Now it will include language learning.”

To learn more about Mango, stop by either library on Sept. 22, or anytime, and ask a librarian for an introduction. Library card holders can access Mango through the libraries’ joint digital content website at libraryla.org/languages.
