“People are going to be, ‘Whoa. Hey, look at this,'” said Gogan, owner of Legal Peaces, a Lisbon Street smoke shop. “Especially when the ballot is on the fourth, it’s gonna get a lot of attention. It’s gonna change things up here, big.”
Legal Peaces is sponsoring the show Nov. 7 and 8 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, just three days after city voters decide whether they want to legalize marijuana possession for adults.
Tickets to the show are $20 per day or $30 for both days.
Gogan and his wife, Shanon, are hoping between 5,000 and 10,000 medical marijuana backers and enthusiasts will come to the show. It will be a mix of musical events; presentations about medical marijuana rules, requirements and options; and booths by vendors.
“What we really want to do is promote people getting their cards, so they don’t go to jail for stupid stuff,” Gogan said. “We’ll have vouchers there and caregivers. Hopefully, they’ll sign up and become patients.”
Expected musical acts include the Gorilla Finger Dub Band, Skosh, Zealous Bellus and Cam Groves.
Doctors will be there to discuss medical marijuana, glass-blowing demonstrations will be held and “fire benders” will juggle flames.
There also will be contests for the best cannabis-based edibles and tinctures. People with valid Maine medical marijuana cards can enter their marijuana brownies, cookies, cakes and other creations, which will be judged on taste, appearance and potency.
The show is modeled on similar events that have been going on around Maine for years — October’s Harvest Ball in Starks and Norway’s Fuda Fest. But Gogan said his event is tuned more toward medical marijuana, and that won’t change, even if Lewiston voters agree to legalize possession.
“There are a lot of patients who don’t have access to stores,” Shanon Gogan said. “It’s opening up for patients to help understand how the whole medical marijuana program can work for them and show them they have options. And then the other part is for nonpatients who want to get a medical marijuana card but don’t know how they can get one.”
