PARIS — The Police Department is changing the look of its cruisers with a new, back-to-basics insignia.
The all-black cars feature blue and yellow lettering, with the word “Police” placed prominently along the sides.
According to police Chief Michael Madden, the push to change the town’s cars from the traditional black-and-white style came when the federal government ended a program subsidizing manufacturers for the work.
“What has happened now is police departments have gone with all-black cars with reflective stripping because (the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requires it,” Madden said recently.
The former look featured the word ‘police’ in faded, blue lettering and the state’s Dirigo flag enclosed around a badge with the words, “Town of Paris, Maine.”
The cost of stenciling each of the three vehicles was $650, according to Town Manager Amy Bernard.
Last week, the town purchased a used 2010 Crown Victoria from Harrison.
