For the first time in nearly 10 years, a list of remaining unbeaten teams in Maine shy of the halfway mark will not include Showhegan. That’s because last week, rival Messalonskee — which does remain on the list — ended their state-record win streak.

Lawrence joins the Eagles as the two unbeatens remaining in Eastern Class A. In West A, Gorham, Cheverus, Sanford and Scarborough all remain without a loss, though none has played more than four games.

In Western B, Spruce Mountain lost a nail-biter to Winslow to fall from the ranks of the unbeaten, leaving perennial power York as the lone unbeaten team in the region. Oceanside — which the Phoenix face next — and Gardiner are unblemished in East B.

Oak Hill, the top team in the MVC, and Yarmouth, tops among Class C schools in the WMC, sport identical 5-0 records to this point in the season. The aforementioned Black Raiders of Winslow and perennial contender Dexter round out the unbeatens in East C, though both trail Foxcroft Academy in the Heal Points due to strength of schedule to date.

Eddies looking for some offense

That Kaylie Vallee scored in overtime for Edward Little against Lewiston on Tuesday comes as a relief to coach Greg Perkins, whose team has been looking for some offense after a five-goal outburst at Brunswick on opening day.

“We put five in the first game, but we’ve been struggling since then,” Perkins said.

Adding Vallee to the list of people who have scored is an important step for Perkins in establishing depth on the front line.

In Games 2 and 3, the Eddies scored one goal. Against Bangor, that was enough for a 1-0 win. Against Oxford Hills, that meant a 2-1 setback. The Eddies also fought through a scoreless tie against Hampden. They did manage two against Cony, and three against Lewiston.

“It’s encouraging,” Perkins said. “We’re getting there.”

Clamping down

St. Dom’s is scoring goals again. Two years removed from scoring just one goal all season, the Saints rectified that situation a year ago, and the momentum has been building. The Saints have scored seven goals in six games this season.

Perhaps equally impressive has been the turnaround on defense. After being scorched for six goals on opening day against Lisbon, the Saints have allowed just six in five games, including back-to-back shutout wins over Hall-Dale and Mountain Valley.

The Saints have a pair of tough games on the horizon with perennial contender Winthrop and MVC No. 1 Oak Hill, so the team’s defensive prowess will be put to the test.

Ups and downs

The Poland Knights started strong this season, but a tough stretch of the schedule has pulled them back into the very crowded Western B pack. Wins over Cape Elizabeth, Greely and Kennebunk — the latter two in overtime — pushed Poland to the top of the Western B pack briefly.

But a gauntlet of games against perennial contenders has pulled the Knights back. Losses to Freeport and Lake Region have the Knights at 3-2, with a matchup looming against Fryeburg before a rivalry game against Route 26 rival Gray-New Gloucester over the weekend.
