LEWISTON — Police on Thursday were looking for a Lewiston woman involved in a Thursday morning high-speed chase that ended in a crash in Portland.

Ashley Gagne, 24, of Lewiston was driving a Massachusetts rental car in Lewiston when Maine State Police trooper John Davis attempted to stop the speeding car, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

The vehicle sped up in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95, McCausland said, and reached 100 mph during the chase.

The chase left I-95 at the Westbrook exit and continued through Westbrook and Portland until the car crashed into a street sign on Allen Avenue in Portland.

Gagne and her passenger, 33-year-old Carlos Alcantara of Fitchburg, Mass., were reported to be seen leaving the crash scene. Police later arrested Alcantara walking along Washington Avenue in Portland, McCausland said. Alcantara was charged with possessing bath salts and taken to the Cumberland County Jail.
