MARSHALL ISLAND — A kayaker who had been the subject of an overnight search was found safe this morning.
The Coast Guard reported that 45-year-old Tony Cashman of Ontario had reached the intended destination for a group of six kayakers he was with but that he landed on the opposite end of Marshall Island.
The six had left from Isle Au Haut, and Cashman was last seen around noon near Fog Island. The total trip is 6.4 miles.
Marshall Island is a 985-acre nature preserve owned by Maine Coast Heritage Trust that is filled with trails for hiking.
When the other kayakers reached Marshall Island they reported Cashman missing at 6:13 p.m.
Rescue crews from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., sent a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, and a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Southwest Harbor to the area. The Coast Guard Cutter Tigershark also was diverted from a regular patrol to assist in the search.
“We have multiple crews intensively searching the area by sea and air,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Christopher Kiener in a news release Saturday night.
The National Weather Service reported that wind gusts along the coast reached 27 mph from the south on Saturday.
The Coast Guard reported early Sunday afternoon that Cashman had found a cottage and stayed there overnight. The Coast Guard did not have details on how contact was made with the missing man or the exact time he was found but said he was safe and had not been injured.
