FARMINGTON — Mt. Blue’s  ground-and-pound attack has been working just quite fine for the Cougars, but they couldn’t handle Cullen McCarty, who gained 230 yards on 28 carries and scored three touchdowns as York rolled to a 38-14 win at Caldwell Field in Friday night’s Class B football game.

It was the Wildcats’ first-ever trip to Franklin County.

Mt. Blue (2-2) regrouped and garnered some offense by scoring on its first two possessions of the second half, pulling to within 24-14. Cougars quarterback Ryan Pratt ran for a 17-yard touchdown and Alex Gilbert gained 29 yards on a 46-yard drive. Gilbert threw a halfback-option pass to Chris Whitney, covering 38 yards. Gilbert (104 yards, 20 carries) gained 18 yards to put the Cougars in the red zone. Anthony Franchetti kicked both extra points.

“We just got beat by a more physical team,” Mt. Blue coach Jim Aylward said. “They are what we want to look like.”

Mt. Blue was coming off a big 14-7 win over Messalonskee, but an adjustment had to be made following the loss of injured running back JT Williams. The Cougars’ workhorse is expected back next week.

York (4-0) was overpowering and blocked the Cougars’ ends and linebackers. This allowed McCarty to reach the secondary. McCarty scored on a 5-yard run at 1:39 following the Cougars initial score.

The Wildcats had allowed 38 points in three previous games.

“We basically have three (running) backs,” said York coach Randy Small, who is 4-0 for the first-time ever in his coaching career. “They will run according to what the other team is giving us.”

York B Cole Merritt gained 89 yards and also threw a 34-yard TD to Mark MacGashing with 27 seconds left in the first quarter. McCarty is the son of former Fitzpatrick winner Peter McCarty from Bangor. The younger McCarty scored on runs of 4 and 3 in the second half.

Wildcat kicker Trevor LaBonte was successful on five PATs and kicked a 7-yard field goal at the end of the first half.

Pratt threw 10 for 76 yards in the first half, including 47 yards to receiver Nate Pratt-Holt. The Cougars’ Zack Meader recovered a fumble to stop York’s first drive in the red zone.

“I don’t think we looked all that bad on offense,”Aylward said, whose team plays Brunswick next Friday. “But we need to be more consistent. We shot ourselves in the foot with penalties.”
