Arguably the two most significant high school football games of the weekend — one for age-old bragging rights, the other with a conference championship and playoff home-field advantage on the line — have been pushed back 24 hours due to soggy field conditions.
The 172nd Battle of the Bridge between Edward Little and Lewiston has been moved to 7 p.m. Saturday at Don Roux Field in Lewiston, and the Class C West regular-season title game between Spruce Mountain and Leavitt also is reset for 7 p.m. Saturday at Libby Field in Turner.
Three days of rain, torrential at times, left puddles of standing water on both fields and persuaded both host sites to allow an extra day for Mother Nature to conduct drying procedures.
With up to three home playoff games possible at Leavitt and boys’ soccer playoffs on the horizon at Lewiston, keeping the fields playable for next week and beyond was an overriding factor in the decision.
