LIVERMORE FALLS — A burning chicken coop scrambled multiple fire departments Sunday morning as the flames quickly spread to an adjacent barn.

According to Livermore Falls fire Chief Tim Hardy, the call came in at 9:11 a.m. for a shed on fire at 238 Campground Road.

Upon arrival, Hardy said the four- by eight-foot shed being used as a chicken coop was fully involved and fire had spread to one wall of a nearby three-story barn, quickly making its way up to the roof. A residence was also attached to the barn.

Hardy said 35 firefighters from Livermore, Jay, Leeds, Wilton and Fayette assisted as police shut down Campground Road. He said the fire was knocked down in about 40 minutes with about an hour and a half overhaul.

“Crews were able to get a line on the fire real quick,” Hardy said. “It was a great stop.”

Hardy said crews had to remove a small portion of the barn roof but characterizes the majority of the barn damage as “cosmetic.” There was no smoke or fire damage to the attached residence.

Hardy said the fire was deemed “accidental” in nature but he said the most likely cause was a heat lamp that was plugged in and operating in the chicken coop at the time of the fire. An undetermined number of chickens were lost in the fire.
