AUBURN — Instead of carrying a deer out of the woods, an Auburn hunter found himself being carried out by Auburn first responders Monday evening off the end of Paul Street.

According to Auburn police Lt. Laurie Woodhead, a 43-year-old man was bow hunting from his tree stand about 25 feet off the ground at 5:30 p.m. when he suddenly took a fall.

Woodhead said not much information was available on the man, as he was in too much pain to talk to rescuers.

According to Woodhead, Auburn police officers and firefighters carried the man about 60 yards. Woodhead said it was difficult moving the hunter through brush in the dark woods with only flashlights to guide them.

According to Woodhead, the hunter was taken to Central Maine Medical Center by an Auburn Fire Department EMS vehicle with non-life-threatening injuries.

Woodhead said the Maine Warden Service will be handling an investigation of the incident.
