Principals and students from Mountain Valley High School in Rumford and Spruce Mountain High School in Jay received second- and third-place honors, respectively, in the Spirit Challenge food drive Friday.
The schools’ contingents traveled to WGME TV studio in Portland for the presentations. The station sponsored the contest to collect food for Good Shepherd Food-Bank from Sept. 12 to Oct. 31.
Eight schools collected the equivalent of 336,273 pounds of food, it was announced Friday.
First place winner was Sanford High School, which collected the equivalent of 93,729 pounds of food in goods and money.
Mountain Valley collected the equivalent of 76,086 pounds and Spruce Mountain the equivalent of 58,435 pounds.
Spruce Mountain Principal T.J. Plourde said he, teacher Michelle Brann and students Amanda Castonguay, Elizabeth Chretien and Emily LaFleur met with the sponsors and staff and students from the other participating schools.
“This was a great opportunity for our school and community to show how much we care. We would like to thank all who donated money, food and time,” Plourde wrote in an email.
Mountain Valley and Spruce Mountain high schools involved other schools in their districts, as well as businesses and individuals.
