LEWISTON — Lyceum Gallery’s new show Friday will be its last.

Tammie Grieshaber is closing the gallery Jan. 2 after a seven-year run to focus on her health and abide by lengthy, doctor-recommended bed rest.

“I’m very sad. It’s been a huge, huge part of my life,” Grieshaber said Monday. “It’s been wonderful to be part of the whole renaissance of the downtown, and I’ve met such great people.”

Located next door to Fuel restaurant on Lisbon Street, Lyceum Gallery has showcased Maine artists, offered workshops and hosted events. It and Grieshaber were a staple of summertime downtown Art Walks.

Traffic has been good but sales are a little slow this year, she said. Grieshaber had wrestled with the idea of closing for a while. She will maintain a partnership with the Hilton Garden Inn in Auburn, changing out an exhibit there every two months.

“The partnership with Fuel has been perfect and we don’t know where that will go as Eric (Agren) plays with some ideas of what he’s going to do with the space,” she said. “The arts may well figure into that.”

Something in the arts may reappear for her, too.

Grieshaber said she’s been diagnosed with extreme adrenal fatigue. She lives above the gallery and plans to stay put there.

“I have no intention of deserting downtown,” she said. “This is a wonderful place to be. If I have to be confined to quarters, this is a great spot to do it.

“It’s going to get better,” Grieshaber said. “I’ve been through lots of changes over the years. The gallery came about when I lost the election for mayor in Auburn and didn’t know what I was going to do. This popped up — I would have never thought of it. It has been the greatest run and the most fun that I have ever had with a job.”

The new and last exhibit, “Precious Things,” opens with a reception Friday night.
