TURNER — The annual Leavitt Ski Team bottle drive will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, starting at 8 a.m.
Ski team members will fan across Turner, Leeds and Greene to pick up bottles. Folks who donate bottles will be entered into a raffle for a stay at the Inn By The River at the Forks.
There is a separate raffle for cash donors to see the super-group “Nickelback” at the Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion in Bangor, with dinner for two at Geoghan’s Pub. Contact Mark Evans at 314-1769 for more information.
The drive helps raise money for the Nordic and alpine teams, which require specialized equipment and waxes. It also raises money for college scholarships for graduating team members.
Recipients for 2013 were Maddie Weigman and Tim Enos and the 2014 scholarship recipients were Alicia Labbe and Derek Plourde.
In 2014, the scholarship was renamed from LAHS Ski Booster Scholarship to the Coach Hartford Memorial Scholarships in honor of Dick Hartford. Hartford was an alpine coach and pioneer of the alpine program in general, and he was also instrumental to the creation of the ski building and the bottle drive fundraiser.
Scholarship amounts are $500 each.
The LASH Scholarship Committee determines the recipients of the scholarship awards based on the following student criteria: Must be graduating senior from LAHS; must have been an active athlete on either the Nordic or alpine ski team for at least two years, with preference given to an active athlete in their senior year; must be enrolled at an accredited college, university, vocational school or certification program; and must submit a completed application, including a short essay on their contributions to the team and how being a member of the ski team has enhanced their lives.
