ORONO — University of Maine officials deleted an “offensive and unauthorized” tweet sent Friday from the UMaine Parking Service Office Twitter account, campus officials said.
“Move. Out. Of. My. Country.,” is what the 11:20 a.m. tweet sent from the @UMParking Twitter account said in response to a tweet by @FeministaJones that read, “#AmericaInFiveWords Country founded on genocide, enslavement.”
“We took it (the post) down and changed the password,” Dan Demeritt, UMaine System spokesman, said. “We’re not exactly sure how this happened. This is a very rarely used account.”
Feminista Jones, a New York City social worker and activist, tweeted several times about the @UMParking post, saying, “ The insidious nature of anti-Blackness is everywhere, even at the @UMaine.” She said later that UMaine officials contacted her to apologize after the offensive post was removed.
“I’m used to those kinds of tweets … so it didn’t even dawn on me that this was some kind of official account until my followers tweeted concern,” Jones said in an email interview. “My first thought was that someone forgot to switch over to their private account before tweeting me. It’s a shame that the tweet went out on an official account associated with a university.”
The university is investigating the unauthorized use of the account, and has contacted Twitter to assist, UMaine spokeswoman Margaret Nagle said in a statement released Friday afternoon.
“The University of Maine deeply regrets that an official Twitter account was used in this manner,” Nagle said. “The offensive tweet has been deleted and security on the account has been updated. UMaine is also conducting an investigation to determine how the unauthorized message was posted to a social media account managed by the university.”
UMaine Vice President for Administration and Finance Ryan Low has emailed an apology to Jones.
Only one tweet was sent before the account’s password was changed, Demeritt said.
“There is no evidence that any of the systems at the University of Maine were compromised,” according to John Forker, chief information security officer for the University of Maine System.
The @UMParking Twitter account had about 100 followers before Friday, when about 35 others signed up, he said.
“There have been 45 tweets in the last four years, all parking and snow related,” Forker said of the account. “Obviously, it’s an unauthorized use, either by an authorized user or an unauthorized user (using a password that was not updated).”
“We’re not clear what happened, but we’re looking into it,” Demeritt said.
