PERU — Students and staff at Dirigo Elementary School raised $477 during the holiday season to provide heating oil to those in need.

Teacher Donna Gilbert said the school had two Christmas trees with gifts supplied by teachers. Students and staff could buy a chance on one of the gifts, which included gift cards, toys, blankets and hand-knit or crocheted hats and mittens.

The raffle raised $477.

Janis Carlton, secretary for Hometown Energy of Dixfield, said the money will be added to a trust fund used for those who qualify for a one-time, 100-gallon, no-cost delivery of fuel.

She said donations this year have not been a much as in the past.

“We’re thankful for the donations,” she said. “It’s nice.”

Fourth-grader Grace Robbins said she took a chance but didn’t win anything. However, she is pleased that the school raised money for the oil.

“I feel good. I’m happy we can give the oil to them,” she said.

Kindergartner Marlee Gray said she, too, was thankful to be able to do it.

Gilbert said the school chooses one or more charities to donate to during the holiday season.
