AUGUSTA — Police on Tuesday morning released the name of a man involved in a police shooting at Riverview Psychiatric Center’s outpatient clinic on Monday.

Augusta Deputy Chief Jared Mills verified the man’s identity as Jason Begin, 36, of Augusta, formerly of Lewiston.

Begin was listed in stable condition Monday night, and no update on his condition Tuesday was available.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Monday, Augusta police Officer Laura Drouin was dispatched to the East Chestnut Street facility after mental health professionals requested help in dealing with Begin, Mills had said in a statement issued Monday evening.

“After contact was made, an incident involving deadly force occurred,” Mills said in that statement.

Drouin was not injured and has been placed on paid administrative leave, per department protocol, according to Mills.

The state’s attorney general’s office is investigating to determine whether deadly force was warranted.

According to records in Androscoggin County Superior Court, Begin had been commited to the state psychiatric hospital rather than standing trial for the theft of a Cessna 150 airplane from Twitchell’s Airport in Turner on Sept. 27, 2003.

He had been trying to avoid prosecution on charges of gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact when he stole the plane and tried to fly it to Montreal, Canada, according to the Sun Journal. He did not have a pilot’s license. The two-seater plane crashed in an open field after it ran out of gas.

Ten months after the accident, the state and Begin’s lawyer agree that he should not be held responsible for stealing the plane because he was too mentally ill at the time of the incident to understand that he was doing something wrong. A judge agreed.
