LISBON — There was no denying the good looks Lisbon earned in the first quarter of Tuesday’s boys’ basketball contest at Manchester Gymnasium against Wiscasset.

One shot after another clanged the iron or rimmed out on the way to a 2-for-18 showing.

The 12-point deficit the Greyhounds faced after a quarter was enough to help the Wolverines to a win, as they survived several Greyhound runs for a 47-45 victory.

In a battle of 3-8 squads, Wiscasset left with a 4-8 mark and key points in the Heal Point Standings.

“We finally were able to win a close game,” said Wiscasset coach Dana Lawrence, whose Wolverines have dropped two contests at the buzzer this season. “This win should give us more confidence.”

Close fourth

After shooting troubles throughout, Lisbon managed to claw back, taking its first lead on a 3-pointer by Noah Carter, 40-39 with 3:31 remaining in regulation.

Wiscasset answered back immediately, as Ethan James pulled down an offensive board and converted for a 41-40 edge. After a Lisbon turnover, Kevin Lynch missed twice, but worked hard to on the glass before scoring for a three-point lead.

Lisbon refused to quit, with Carter, who tallied all five of his points in the fourth, hitting a short jumper and Tyrese Joseph going hard to the basket for a 44-43 Greyhound advantage.

“We set up a certain play, with Ty the first option, and he had one of his better games of the season,” said Lisbon coach Jake Gentle.

Again Wiscasset had an answer as James scored while being fouled for a 45-44 edge with 22 seconds left. James, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds, missed the free throws, but Thomas Anderson picked up a rebound of a Lisbon miss and was fouled. He made 1-of-2 for a 46-44 advantage.

Joseph, who had 10 fourth-quarter points, again went hard to the basket and was fouled. He made the first, but missed the second with Lynch grabbing the board with five seconds left. Lynch made 1-of-2 at the charity stripe, and Lisbon’s last chance was snuffed out by James.

“This was a tough game, but this is a big win for this team and gives us some momentum for the rest of our season,” said James, who recently returned after sustaining a badly sprained ankle. James had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Lynch picked up eight points and 10 boards as the Wolverines outrebounded the Greyhounds, 39-34.

“It is huge having these guys back, Ethan and Thomas Anderson, guys who are helping us out with rebounds and putbacks,” said Lawrence.

“It came down to them on the glass, with James doing a good job on the offensive boards. He is a great player, a sophomore who will be in this conference for a while,” said Gentle.

Lisbon shot just 26 percent (17-of-64), while the Wolverines were 20-of-56 from the floor and a paltry 5-of-19 from the free-throw line.

“We really had to overcome a poor first half of shooting. It came down to making shots. If we would have shot consistently, it might have been a different story,” said Gentle.

“We have struggled from the line in all but one game, and it continues to be a problem,” said Lawrence.

Lisbon’s Johnny Yim scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the second quarter as the Greyhounds cut the Wolverines’ big first-quarter lead to 26-22 at the half. Yim added five steals, while Joe Philbrick pulled down seven rebounds. Jonah Sautter dished out four assists.
