NEW SHARON — The New Sharon Village Elders will host a Seniors Hour from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Jim Ditzler Memorial Library, 37 Library Road.
Librarian Diana Oliver will provide a tour and discuss ways the library can help seniors, including large-print reading materials or perhaps a senior computer class this spring, Theresa Jessop, a member of New Sharon Village Elders, said.
The event will be followed by a light lunch sponsored by River Vision Press in Lewiston, which is owned by author Jim Baumer.
Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. will speak to the Village Elders next month about the Elder Care program initiated by his department. That meeting will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at the New Sharon Town Hall.
A history of New Sharon is being compiled for a presentation in May, Jessop said.
New Sharon Village Elders was formed last year after a group met in March with one goal in mind: help seniors in town. The group based its efforts Rangeley’s program with the help of Baumer of Lewiston, Jessop said.
“We want to help seniors be able to stay in their homes,” Jessop said.
The Village Elders is now 12 members strong, she said. Members have shoveled show or carried firewood for seniors in town, especially those with little or no family around, she said.
The group also organized events such as a Senior Fair this past October. Seniors heard from representatives of SeniorsPlus, the Healthy Community Coalition mobile health van, a police officer who discussed home invasions, and safety, Jessop said.
