PARIS — Selectmen have scheduled a special town meeting to ask voters to change the Budget Committee ordinance to a policy and reduce the comittee’s membership.

On Monday, selectmen unanimously endorsed reducing the size of the committee from nine to five members, altering control over the committee from an ordinance to a policy and replacing language permitting their attendance at meetings to encouraging it.

A special town meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at the Town Office to ask voters to approve the recommendations.

The town has had trouble filling open slots on the Budget Committee and the current membership lacks a quorum to conduct its business. Only three of nine slots are filled.

Applications can be filled out at the Town Office.

By changing the ordinance to a policy, selectmen said they would be able to make these changes more readily in subsequent years.

Town officials hope to pass the changes before the committee’s first meeting — an organizational gathering toward the end of February.
