LEWISTON — More than a dozen local people were behind bars Friday after indictments were handed up and police swept the streets, arresting 14 on drug charges.
Before first light Friday, police from several agencies were in downtown Lewiston, rounding up the last of the suspects. Local residents reported seeing police, drug agents and at least one FBI agent in the neighborhood of Bartlett, Pine and Howe streets.
Other officers fanned out across other parts of the city as the suspects were tracked down and arrested.
U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II announced later Friday that a federal grand jury sitting in Portland had indicted Tasheem Carter, 29, of Far Rockaway, N.Y., and Lewiston, on a charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and oxycodone.
Also indicted was Christian Dent, 31, of Far Rockaway and Lewiston, on a charge of conspiracy to distribute 28 grams or more of cocaine base, possession with intent to distribute 28 grams or more of cocaine base and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The following additional charges were made:
Sabree Branch, 23, of Philadelphia and Lewiston, for use of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, possession of cocaine base and unlawful use of a communication facility;
Michael Boney, 28, of Far Rockaway and Auburn, on a charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and cocaine base;
Isar Coleman, 31, of Lewiston, on a charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine base;
Angela Crabtree, 32, of Auburn, on a charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine base;
Katelynn Dubois, 21, of Wales, on a charge of conspiracy to distribute oxycodone;
Lee Eirby, 66, of Lewiston, on a charge of maintaining a drug-involved premises;
Isaac Fofie, 26, of New Sharon, on charges of conspiracy to distribute heroin and distribution of heroin;
Kourtney Francoeur, 21, of Lewiston, on a charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine base;
Jamel Hamilton, of Far Rockaway, on a charge of conspiracy to distribute heroin;
Willie Jackson, 32, of Lewiston, on a charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine base;
Rebecca Thompson, 33, of Lewiston, on a charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine base; and
Barney Whitfield, 33, of Lewiston, on a charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine base and heroin.
Police said the charges stem from the distribution of cocaine and heroin in the Lewiston-Auburn area.
Federal, state and local agents arrested Branch, Coleman, Crabtree, Dubois, Eirby, Fofie, Francoeur, Hamilton, Jackson, Thompson and Whitfield on Friday morning while executing warrants.
Carter, Dent and Boney had been previously charged in criminal complaints, police said.
The suspects were expected to make appearances in U.S. District Court in Portland on Friday afternoon.
