NEWRY — A Shrewsbury, Mass., man was killed early Saturday morning when his car went off the road and into a utility pole.
Mickael A. Jette, 24, was driving south on Sunday River Road near the Route 2 intersection at about 2:37 a.m. when he lost control of his car, went airborne over a snowbank and crashed into a Central Maine Power utility pole, Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant said.
“It cracked the pole, and it’s one of those very huge poles,” Gallant said. “It split it but it was still intact.”
Gallant said the car was wrapped entirely around the pole and Jette died on impact.
The accident cracked a transformer on the pole and rescue crews had to wait for CMP to shut off power before they could access Jette’s black 2006 Volvo.
Power was shut off to many in the area for about 90 minutes following the accident.
Personnel from the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Bethel Fire and Rescue responded to the accident.
