NORTH YARMOUTH — Allison Frechette scored a hat trick as Lewiston skated to a 5-3 victory over Yarmouth in girls’ ice hockey action Saturday.
The Clippers got to within one with 4:57 remaining in regulation when Katie Clemmer scored her second consecutive goal. But, Lauren Deblois provided the Blue Devils a safety 21 seconds later, and the defense held on for the win.
Goalie Hannah Williams made 21 saves for Yarmouth, while Paige Fontaine turned back 14 shots in two periods of action, and goalie Meagan Gosselin stopped six in the third period for Lewiston.
Edward Little 8, St. Dom’s 1
AUBURN — Haley Frohlich scored twice to lead the Leavitt Little Poland Red Hornets to the 8-1 victory over the St. Dominic Academy Saints.
Saige Arseneault had a goal and an assist for the Red Hornets (14-2-1). Maddy Derosa, Danica Nadeau, Mariah Vallancourt, Atia LaFontaine and Abby Roy also scored in the victory.
Kim Johnson scored the lone goal for the Saints (6-10-0).
Savannah Shaw made nine saves in the win while Payton Winslon made 25 saves in the loss.
Girls’ basketball
Dirigo 50, St. Dom’s 37
DIXFIELD — Senior guard Jessica Conant drained 22 points and tallied five rebounds to lead Dirigo to a 50-37 victory over St. Dom’s in MVC girls’ basketball action Saturday.
Sophomore center Chloe Dwinell provided the Saints (3-10) with 17 points, all posted in the first half. Allie Veinote netted four field goals from beyond the arc in the third quarter for St. Dom’s.
The Cougars (12-2) finished strong in the fourth quarter on a 13-2 run. Junior point guard Emma Leuders scored nine points and had eight steals for Dirigo in the winning effort.
Women’s basketball
UMF, Green Mountain split
FARMINGTON — Three University of Maine at Farmington players scored in double figures as the Beavers notched a convincing 77-23 victory over Green Mountain College in women’s basketball action Saturday.
The Beavers (7-10) controlled the game from the opening tip. Kelly Pomerleau led the scoring attack with 14 points and hit 4-for-6 from long range. Mehgan Smith and Courtney Alofs added 12 points apiece.
Keelin Banks recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds for Green Mountain.
Tufts 83, Bates 37
MEDFORD, Mass. — Sophomore Michela North drained a game-high 19 points to lead Tufts to a commanding 83-37 victory over Bates College in NESCAC women’s basketball action Saturday.
The Jumbos (16-1) built an early 14-3 lead. But the Bobcats (9-8) hung in and twice narrowed the margin to seven, including 22-15 on a jumper by sophomore Allie Coppola near the six-minute mark.
Bates was led by first-year Nina Davenport with 15 points.
Davenport and Coppola led Bates with five rebounds each, while sophomore Bernadette Connors finished with six points, two rebounds and an assist and a steal.
Men’s basketball
Green Mountain 89, UMaine-Farmington 75
FARMINGTON — Four starters scored in double figures as the University of Maine at Farmington fell 89-75 to Green Mountain College in men’s basketball Saturday afternoon.
Nick Hilton led the way for the Beavers (4-12) with 22 points and seven rebounds. Uriah Forest-Bulley recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Pet Sumner scored 14 points on 6-for-13 shooting and Logan Nichols added 10 points to the Farmington offense.
Bates 64, Tufts 51
LEWISTON — Mike Boornazian recorded a game-high 20 points as Bates College secured a 64-51 victory over Tufts University in NESCAC men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The Jumbos (8-8) led 34-32 at the half. But Graham Safford assisted Boornazian on back-to-back threes at the 16:48 and 15:59 marks of the second half, giving Bates its’ first lead of the game at 40-.39.
The Bobcats (12-4) had a decisive second-half run that was led with a putback from Marcus Delpeche for a 46-41 Bates lead.
St. Joseph’s 94, CMCC 86 (OT)
AUBURN — Preston Isner scored a game-high 21 points, all in the second half, with eight of those in the last three munites to push the game into overtime. But, costly turnovers and missed opportunites in the overtime frame gave St. Joseph’s a 94-86 triumph over Central Maine Community College in men’s basketball action Saturday.
Xavier Colbert contributed 18 points, while Carrington Miller chipped in with 17 points for the Mustangs.
Swimming
Charest smashes school record
WATERVILLE — Lewiston High School swimmers inched closer to qualifying for states Friday evening in a swim meet with Messalonskee in Waterville.
The highlight of the evening was Mathew Charest’s performance in the 500-yard freestyle. Charest’s time of 5:05.42 cut 10 seconds off the previous record.
“Matt swam an incredibly smart, well-paced race,” coach Troy Boutin said.
The school record in that event had stood for approximately 14 years.
When Matt climbed out of the pool after the race, the first thing he said to Boutin was, “I did that for Dennis (Roy).” Roy was a long-time assistant coach who is dearly missed by all.
Gaziano Award
AUGUSTA — Jeff Kane, president of National Distributors, Inc. and Frank J. Gaziano’s son-in-law, announced the scholarship winners of the frank J. Gaziano Memorial Offensive and Defensive Lineman Awards during a luncheon ceremony at the Augsuta Civic Center.
Zach Davis of Windham High School and Zordan Holman of Cheverus High School were named the top Senior football offensive and defensive linemen in the state based on their hard work on the field, in the classroom, and in their communities. The two winners each received a trophy, leather jacket and scholarship of $5,000, the largest high school football scholarship of its kind in the country.
