Three men — the current president of the University of Maine at Augusta, the provost at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, and a businessman and dean from West Virginia University — have been named finalists to lead the University of Southern Maine.

The men were chosen from a pool of 80 candidates and each will make campus visits in February, according to university officials.

The university system released these details on the candidates:

He is also assistant professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Southern Maine and previously served as president and executive director of the G.W. Hinckley Foundation/Maine Academy of Natural Sciences, deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Education and speaker of the Maine House of Representatives. He earned a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania. Cummings will visit USM on Feb. 9 and 10.

Harvey Kesselman is the provost and executive vice president at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. His previous positions at The Richard Stockton College include dean and professor of education, interim vice president for Administration and Finance, special assistant to the president, and vice president for Student Affairs. The search committee, which consists of representatives from the board of trustees, faculty, staff, students, the community, the Board of Visitors and a designee of the chancellor, began its national search for a new leader of USM last October.

“The talent, diversity, size and enthusiasm of the applicant pool surpassed our expectations,” James Erwin, UMS trustee and chairman of the Presidential Search Committee, said in a prepared statement. “The search committee has selected strong finalists for the job of leading and transforming USM into a metropolitan university that will make it an indispensable partner to the Portland and Lewiston-Auburn regions.”

Erwin said the university welcomed “broad participation in the campus visits and feedback so we can provide the chancellor and the board of trustees with the best information available for them to make the right choice for USM, its students and the communities it serves.”
